#OURHOME – AARON FLORES

During this time of uncertainty, home has undoubtedly become a safe shelter, a sanctuary, and our main window into the world. The Covid-19 pandemic forced us to reshape how we live our lives, but how has it impacted how we live inside our households? What does home mean today? And how are we making the most of our homes for years to come?

To help answer these questions, we’re launching #OurHome, a series of social media posts focused on Boulevard Realty at Home. Over the course of the next weeks, we’ll be gathering and sharing stories, thoughts and ideas from our staff and agents, in hopes of inspiring you and help spread positivity.

Our first visit is with Aaron Flores, our Marketing Director.

Even though I’ve lived in this casita in the Houston Heights for three years, I’ve never fully appreciated the yard until now. I always thought of this birdhouse, which has been here since I moved in, as just a sculpture. Over the last few weeks I’ve seen it actually used by quite a few birds. With basically a 600 square foot house on a standard 6,600 square foot Houston Heights lot, I feel pretty damn lucky to have so much room to play right now.

The patio which used to just be where I parked my bike has become my makeshift gym. I’m a member of the District H Crossfit box on Studewood and they were kind enough to let their members borrow equipment and have been posting at-home workouts and checking in on us every few days.

The weather has been pretty perfect these past few weeks so most of the day I leave the front door open and it’s a reminder to step outside every few minutes just to stretch and get some fresh air and sun.

Since I’m working all day at home now, I’ve also made a makeshift standing desk at my breakfast table to give some variety. I spend about half the day using this set-up and the other half sitting at my desk, usually depending on what I’m working on. I use a standing desk about half the time at the office too, so it was going to be hard to sit at a desk all day again.

I started a batch of kombucha to have something to check on each day and carved out a little dead space next to my couch to store it so it’s out of the way. It’ll take about 45 days to brew all in all, so I wonder where we’ll be in the pandemic by the time it’s ready to drink.

We have a little pond in our yard that I’ve never enjoyed more, now I feel silly never sitting here before. I have coffee out here most mornings just to break the monotony. No one is coming to clean it now, which is fine, and we took out the pump. Will probably have to drain and refill it when all is said and done, which is also fine. I live south of White Oak so am used to hearing the white noise of I-10 from here, but it’s noticeably quieter.
